Dresses

This is a little story about dresses.

Remember this dress?  It's Small T's prom dress that we bought a few weeks ago.  We drove the 2 hours last night to get the alterations done on it.  Or so I thought.

 As soon as we walked in the door of the store, she spied this dress and said "Oh My God...there's my dress!"  She tried it on and traded her other dress in on this one.  This was a lot more expensive but she does look like a million bucks in the "new" one and it fits her like a glove.  It only needs the hem done.

Last night, Miss R also went with us to the store and she found her dress as well.  She tried on several and this photo really doesn't do her or the dress justice, but she is one elegant, sexy young woman wearing this dress.  She's out of school but her boyfriend is a senior so it's appropriate for her age.

Then, this past Sunday, we bought my niece, Z's dress.  Small T tried it on but I didn't get a photo of her wearing it, so you have to look at it on the hanger.  Z is the same size as Small T and she's going to look fabulous in it.

So that's my story about dresses this morning.

Coupons & Rewards Cards

It's that time of year again...Christmas shopping time.  I enjoy shopping but I enjoy it more when I don't have a budget.  This year, I have a budget.  Darn it!  With my children being young adults and teenagers, that means that their lists usually contain items not bought at Wal-Mart.  In other words, it's a trip to the mall.  Over the years, I have signed up for every store rewards card that we frequent and it really pays off.  I either have coupons that I've received in the mail or enough purchases on the rewards card that I get a percentage off that days purchase.  I saved the following on this years shopping trip:

Small T's Christmas Wish List consisted of a pair of Nike's, a pair of boots, a pair of black yoga pants, some nice panties, and some headbands.  A pretty decent list if you ask me.
Big C's list - Crown Royal (nope...he's a minor), money, clothes, and iTunes cards.
Medium J didn't have a list.

1 pair of Nike's at Finish Line - price $129.99 - I paid $92 and some change.  I had a $20 off coupon when you spend $100 and I had a $20 off total purchase rewards coupon for being a loyal customer.  And Small T was able to get the exact shoes that she wanted.  They didn't have her size, so she tried on a size smaller and a size larger and then they shipped her shoes to the house.  It was free shipping and we received them in 3 business days.  That's a great deal!

1 pair of riding boots at Journey's - price $59.99 - I paid $52 and some change.  I had a $10 off coupon for the store.  This wasn't as big of a savings, but at least I didn't pay full price for what Small T was wanting.  Big C is a frequent customer of this store, so with the coupons we get and the rewards card, we end up saving over the course of the whole year.

1 plaid dress shirt at American Eagle - price $49.99 - I paid $24 and some change.  The shirt was 40% off regular price and I had a percentage off on my rewards card.  By the way, this is for Medium J.

1 Big Bang Theory t-shirt at Hot Topic - price $29.99 - I paid $21 and some change thanks to my rewards card having a percentage off.  :)  This is for Little Ty.

7 pairs of panties, some headbands, and a bottle of perfume at Aerie - price $64.45 total - I paid $44 and some change.  I had a $20 coupon when you spend $60.  This was printed on my American Eagle receipt.

Now...the only thing I paid full price for was a pair of black yoga pants at Victoria's Secret.  They were less than $40 including a small bottle of my favorite perfume, so I think I saved enough on the other purchases to justify the full price at this store.

Then we went to MC Sports.  I bought 4 packages of Under Armour Socks and 3 packages of headbands here. My total price was $105 and I paid $90.  I had a $15 coupon.

The last place we stopped (for my shopping) was Goody's.  I bought a pair of men's slippers (reg price $30 on sale for $9.99), and a double breasted pea coat (reg price $50 on sale for $29.99) for a grand total of $39.98 plus tax.  I had a 30% off shopping spree coupon and my final total was $27.99.

We went to a few other places to do some shopping but since Small T was the one doing the shopping, I won't share her details on here....even though she shopped with coupons and rewards cards too.  She's a great shopper and loves getting brand name clothes without paying full price.  At one store, she ended up with an Under Armour sweatshirt (over $60), a pair of texting and sports gloves (over $30), a headwarmer (over $25) and paid less than $90.  She got what she wanted and saved over $25.  That's my girl!  She's best at hitting the clearance and on sale items and combining them with coupons and rewards savings.  That's how she is able to stock her closet with the clothes she wants.

On Black Friday, I sent Big C to the store where he shops - Casual Male XL.  He was in bad need of clothes.  He bought 4 pairs of khaki's, 2 polo shirts, a winter coat, a pair of jeans, a plaid dress shirt, 2 pairs of sweat pants, and  2 sweatshirts.  The coat, jeans and dress shirt were on sale and the rest of the items were buy one, get one free.  He ended up spending a little over $300 and I think that was a great deal.  For someone his size, the khaki's are regularly priced at $55 each and at buy one, get one...you just can't pass that up.  It also helped that I had a coupon for save $30 when you spend $100.  :)  Go Mom!!!

So...that's my shopping savings.  

Today...Saturday...

I started out my day...

 at the pool...

 I had a bit of spare time after getting things set up, so I soaked my feet a bit and tanned my backside for awhile...since it seldom sees any sun...I can't be tanned on the front and white on the back....

 I looked through a magazine as well...and found this bit of inspiration...

 and this seems like a good charity to donate to...

 and I keep hearing a lot about this foundation...maybe it would be worth trying out....

 and I was thrilled to bits to see that Pink is now a Covergirl....

 I love her....I always tell my kids that I have an inner Beyonce or Pink dying to come out...

 and this looks like it would be the perfect Christmas gift for one of my sister's...as her cell phone is always dead...she uses it for work...24/7....

 and after I got home tonight, Small T gifted me with this little plaque....which is funny when you consider that our last name (before marriage) was Wine...so anything Wine related is comical when applied to our family...

 I worked and worked on this and ran out of yarn this evening....so....I have to buy more so I can finish this up...it is an upcoming free pattern...

 and then I was inspired to make this little cover for my coffee cup...I'll post this free pattern asap too....

and finally...I've watched Little Ty...be a worm...and inch across my floor this evening...I think he's either bored or hyped up on something...not sure which...

and now I'm off to bed...as I have a long day tomorrow...I'm off to the ER in a town about 1 1/2 hours away...I've torn something in my knee I think....not good.

Building Your Wardrobe

As you all know, I have one daughter....Small T.  She's 15 going on 16 and in the 10th grade.  She is involved in a lot of activities and groups and such and with that, she travels a lot.  She also attends a variety of functions, dinners, and meetings.  This means her wardrobe needs to expand.  We've been working on this for a year or so and I've finally gotten her to where she is no longer looking for all the "trendy" clothes and has started adding some basics to her wardrobe.  Whenever I find things like this....

I try to forward them to her, so she has an idea of what I'm talking about.  So far, she has added the following items:
The timeless black pump (She would never consider these because they looked like something an old lady would wear.  But, she had to have a pair for her FFA dress outfit that they wear all year long and she finally tried some on.  She found them to be extremely comfortable and now wears them whenever she can.  She's able to walk for several city blocks in them and wear them all day and they don't hurt her feet.)
Black Dress Pants & Khaki Dress Pants (She wears these often.  I bought her well made pants and had them altered to fit her body last year.)

Black Binkini
White cotton oxford shirt
White and Black tanks

Scarves and belts  (She is working on a building a collection of these to expand her wardrobe.)
2 pairs of well fitting jeans (She has a few more pairs but these two pairs are as if they were made for her body.)

We are supposed to be going shopping this weekend as she needs a Little Black Dress for an upcoming event.  We are also looking for a Classic Black Blazer.  Both of these will need alterations as it's impossible to find something that fits her body due to her size.
This post is my way of asking other mom's if they are doing the same thing with their teen girls.  If not, is it something you have considered?

Taco's

I have a busy day tomorrow, yet again.  We have a couple of doctor appointments and a trip out of town to Wal-Mart for a few items.  So while I'm there, I will do a bit of grocery shopping and then post what I bought and how much I spent as soon as I get the chance.  I won't be using the crock pot tomorrow since I'll have time to actually cook dinner, and since ground beef is on sale again this week, Small T suggested that we have Taco's for dinner since it's something we seldom have.  So that's the plan.  On Friday, I'm subbing at the school, so I'll be breaking out the crock pot again.  I'll probably make a chicken recipe.  I have a few different ones in mind.  Tomorrow morning, I have to spend a few minutes (while drinking my coffee) and make out a shopping list.  I will be shopping at Wal-Mart and at our local grocery store since there are things I need at both places, due to the prices.

Edited to Add....
I have started making my own taco seasoning for the taco meat.
Here is the recipe I used, with a few comments below.

1 Tbsp. chili powder (I would use a little bit MORE of this.)
1 Tbsp. ground cumin (I would use a lot LESS of this.  I did not care for the overpowering taste of it.)
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 Tbsp. onion powder
1/4 Tbsp. crushed red pepper (I wouldn't use this.  My family doesn't care for hot stuff.)

The recipe didn't say to add water, but over the course of heating this, I added almost 2 cups of water (a little at a time) to the mixture and all of it was soaked up.  I could have probably added more water and it would have still been ok.  I thought the meat needed some liquid because the spices were just "sitting" on top and not mixed in.

Now, I need to add that all of my family liked the taco meat.  Especially Small T as she likes her food to be very flavorful.

Back before Christmas, Big Daddy and I made another trip to Wal-Mart to buy presents.  I spent some time  making a list and seeing if I had any coupons for what I was going to buy.

I always give my kids things they can use....like toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo & conditioner, body sprays, shaving cream and razors, etc. in their Christmas stockings.  It's stuff they always need.
The coupons on candy was a bonus.  I shared this candy with one of my sisters' (for her kids).
The crochet hooks, craft books, and yarn were all gifts for crafty family members.  I find that I enjoy buying these type of gifts as they are "useful".
That was my last Wal-Mart trip for Christmas shopping.  There were 3 during the shopping season.

Shopping....and saving with coupons...

Today, I skipped working at the farm and went to the doctor for the dreaded ear ache (in both ears).  I needed to pick up a prescription and that involved a trip out of town.  So, when going out of town, we try to do everything possible in that one trip.  Today, Big Daddy and I decided to use my down time for a bit of Christmas shopping after the pharmacy trip.  I brought along my meager stash of coupons (that I will use) and with that in mind, we bought several gifts and saved money at the same time.
Here's what we bought at Dollar General:
1 pair of slippers at $6
1 package of Christmas lights at $6
2 pairs of earbuds at $3 each
2 boxes of Christmas cards at $1 each
2 pairs of slippers at $8 each minus $1.60 off each
2 pairs of thick heavy wool socks at $4 total minus 80 cents off
1 arctic knit hat at $5
20 pack of batteries at $5
2 packages of mini glass ornaments for our tiny tree at $1 each
3 (9 volt) batteries for the smoke detectors at $1 each
Total: $54.75 saved $4.00 on sale items (I did not use coupons at this store).  The only gifts out of this trip are the slippers and the earbuds.  The socks and hat are for me since I work outside in the cold and I'm freezing to death right now.  The batteries are essential, especially the ones for the smoke detectors.  It's that time of year to change them.

Then we went to Wal-Mart.  I cleaned up with my coupons here.

Gillette Fusion razor and cartridge set for $5 (I could not use my coupon...but it was still cheaper than buying the items separately even using the coupon.  The cartridges are normally $13+ and the razor is around $7)

My total was $114.46 and I saved $11.97 with the coupons.  Everything I bought, minus the soda and the tampons, will be included in my kids' Christmas gifts.  Plus, they were all things that we normally use.  All in all, I'm happy with everything that we bought....and I'm thrilled that I saved money while doing so.

This evening, Big Daddy and Medium J went to the grocery store for me since I'm not feeling well.  Era is on sale for $1.99 with a limit of 2.  I sent them both with enough money to buy 4 each (making 2 trips in and out).  The store didn't have any more on the shelf, or they would have bought a few more.  I'll have them try again tomorrow.  Era is the only laundry soap we can use due to allergies.  I try to only buy it when there's a sale like this.  Then, we'll buy 10 or more bottles and hope that it lasts until the next sale.  Era is normally $5.69 or more a bottle here in town.  With this trip, I'm saving $3.70 per bottle and with buying the 8 bottles we saved $29.60 and we only spent $15.92 plus tax.  Woo Hoo!

Sunday Paper - Coupons

You know, I never buy a Sunday Paper.  Ever.  Today, I thought...why not.  I dished out my $2.15 then came home to check out the coupons.  I didn't think there would be enough coupons in the circular to cover the money I spent on the paper.  Boy, was I wrong!  I found:
$1 off 2 Herbal Essences products (that's what we use)
$2.50 off 2 Tampax Pearl products (that's what Small T uses)
a Buy one get one coupon on Gillette female disposable razors (that's what we use)
25 cents off Bounty towels (maybe)
$1 off one Olay body wash (maybe)
and several other coupons on men's razors (maybe)
So...in the long run, even if I only use the coupons for Herbal Essences and Tampax Pearl, I'm still ahead $1.35 after paying for the paper.  Guess I'll start buying the paper more often!

Thursday (Thanksgiving)...

We had a lot of family at our house for Thanksgiving Dinner.  It was wonderful!

As soon as they left, the kids started in with their usual arguing and fighting.  But, this time, they were playing, for the most part.  Luckily.

Thursday evening, we hit the 8 pm sale at Wal-Mart.  Big Daddy, Big C, Small T and I went.  It was Small T's first year of going shopping on Black Friday.  We got everything we went there for and spent $167.64 which was well under my allotted budget.  Here's what we got:

4 pairs of Wrangler Jeans at $9.50 each

2 pairs of Rustler Jeans at $6 each

undershirts for $8

boxers for $8

17 movies at $1.96 each

5 TV series boxed sets at $9.96 each

and four 20 ounce soda's at $1.58 each for the thirsty shoppers

Overall, we saved $107.84 on our purchases.

Job well done!  And worth the chaos!

A Yarn Teaser

Weekly Highlights

Gosh, what a week it's been!

 I've managed to sneak in some crochet time though.  But not much.  I've started working on the squares for the True Blood Water Lily blanket again.  I did have 20 of them complete, and as of last night, my current count is 33 finished squares.  I'm thrilled.  Truly.  I'm hoping that I will only need 48 squares, but the pattern calls for 63, so we'll see.  Once I get 48 of them, I will place them all out on the floor and see how big it is.  Then I'll go from there.

 We got a new umbrella at the pool.  To cover the lifeguard stand from the direct sunlight.  It's fabulous!  Much bigger than the previous one.  Big C is posing with it, so you can get the full effect.

 Small T and Hannah, the Asst. Mgr. at the pool, made Eggless Cookie Dough one night after work.  They really needed to eat some cookie dough.  Both were either stressed or suffering from PMS.  The recipe can be found here http://baskersfunfoods.blogspot.com/2009/05/cookie-dough-for-preggies.html.  I tried it and honestly, it's great!  In fact, I had several spoons of it.

 As I've mentioned previously, Small T has obtained her driver's permit.  With that, comes several other lessons, such as learning to pump gas.  She seems eager to learn, so that's a good thing.  In fact, she was like "do you think I could pump the gas" with a big grin on her face.  :)  LOL  One day, she will hate it....like when it's pouring down rain or extremely cold and snowy.  But while she's thrilled with doing it, I'm letting her have some fun while learning at the same time.

 My first set of company this week was Baby E and her mom.  I didn't realize that we just don't have any toys around the house for a 1 year old.  We will definitely have to rectify that situation soon.  Big C did go downstairs and search through his stuff and found Trusty, his faithful beanie toy and companion from when he was little.  Trusty is about 15 years old, if I figured right.  He's currently sitting on the side table in the living room, waiting for Baby E to come back for another visit.

 We received notification that one of Small T's photos was chosen to go to the State Fair.  Big C and I lobbied hard for Small T to choose this photo as one of her three that she was entering.  And look what happened, it was chosen to be her best AND to be shown in Sedalia over the next few coming weeks.  I hope it does well there too!

 My third set of company this week arrived simply because their camper broke down between their home and my home.  They are on their way to Sturgis, SD for the big bike rally.  Big Daddy fixed the camper the next morning and off they went.  But things didn't go well, as they only made it 165 miles and then their Harley pick-up truck broke down (it was pulling the camper).  But, I'm told, that they finally made it to SD even though they were a day late.  This is one of my sister's, her husband, and two of their kids, plus Small T with her face covered up by a hand.  This was their "silly" photo.

 This photo says so many things....

First... Big C is a real man....he offered to carry our shopping bags.  What a guy!  Second...I think he was getting tired of shopping and if he carried the bags, we might hurry up some.  Third...we spent too much time in Journey's as we have more than one bag from there.  LOL

And my last photo says it all...it's been quite a week.  Big C did survive the back-to-school shopping even though he's letting Small T take this crazy photo!

Christmas Ornaments

I found these lovely Christmas ornaments at the local dimestore last week. They were a buck a piece! Super deal! I couldn't resist them and ended up buying one of each! These will look great on my tree this year!

Thrift Store Bargains

One day last week I had the opportunity to visit the thrift store in the next town over. As always, there are good bargains to be had. For a $10 bill, I got the following:

A set of shot glasses. These will be a gift for a grown niece.

A lovely yellow sheet for my bed (the color just isn't showing up enough) and 25, yep 25, pillowcases. There are 4 sets and the rest are singles. I am hoping to put a crochet edging on some of them to fancy them up. The pillowcases are priced at 75 cents per pair. That's a bargain! Normally, I find a lot of embroidered pillow cases in the bin, but this time they didn't have any. Maybe next time. I really lucked out though because I found 3 sets of "manly" pillowcases...gray with stripes, a sort of khaki green color, and the camo with orange trim. My guys will love these! I can't wait until I get the opportunity to go and scavenge around again!

Started My Shopping

I started my Christmas gift shopping on Monday. And I even did the unthinkable...I wrapped the gifts when I got them home instead of waiting until the last minute. :)

Yarn Therapy

Yesterday morning, Big Daddy needed to go out of town to buy some parts for Medium J's car. I was planning to take a quick nap, but then he said the magic words "Do you want to go with me....I'll buy you some yarn." Well, of course I want to go. Here's what I ended up with. Isn't it fab? Yarn Therapy

I was in bad need of some yarn therapy today. So...when I stopped at Wal-Mart, I went straight to the craft section to check out the goodies. I was surprised to see that they are carrying Red Heart Pound of Love. I made sure to buy a skein of it. Then I bought 6 skeins of Simply Soft in the colors: black, autumn red, blue mint, plum perfect, ocean and grey heather. Now, I need to find the time to make something with them. :)

Book Therapy

Kenny wanted to eat lunch at Subway today and guess what's next door? Barnes and Noble!!! Woo Hoo! I used some of my earning these past weeks and did a bit of book shopping. In the process, I added to four of the series' that we read. I bought book 6 of The Last Apprentice, Book 6 of Ranger's Apprentice, Book 5 of the Fablehaven series, and books 7, 8 and 9 of The Otherworld Series. If you remember correctly, I had posted that I was re-reading The Otherworld Series just this past week. Woo Hoo! Lots of good reading in my future!!!

Yarn Therapy

I needed a bit of yarn therapy today, so I stopped by Hobby Lobby after they released my husband from the hospital. I managed to contain myself, and only bought 7 skeins of "I Love This Yarn". I can't get this stuff at home, so I always try to stop whenever I'm in Columbia.
